Our Azure cloud migration services move your servers, SQL Server databases, file shares and line-of-business applications from an office server room or an aging hosting provider into Microsoft Azure. Every workload is assessed first, moved in planned waves, tested before cutover, and handed back with cost controls and documentation. Edward Pinela, MBA, runs the engagement himself from assessment to handover.

A migration is not one decision. Each workload gets its own treatment: some move as they are to Azure virtual machines, some move to managed services such as Azure SQL, some are replaced by software you already pay for, and some are simply retired. Getting those calls right is most of the value, and it is where the first weeks go. It begins with a free 30-minute strategy call; there is no published package price for Azure work, so you receive an itemized quote once the scope is clear.

Why are businesses moving to Azure now?

For most businesses we talk to, the trigger is a date or a failure, not a strategy. Extended support for SQL Server 2016 ended on July 14, 2026, and Windows Server 2016 follows on January 12, 2027. After those dates Microsoft ships no security updates unless you buy Extended Security Updates.

Those updates come at no extra charge for eligible versions running on Azure virtual machines, while on your own hardware they are a paid subscription. That turns a support deadline into a reason to move rather than a reason to buy new servers. Other common triggers:

  • Servers coming off warranty, with a hardware quote nobody wants to sign
  • One server room holding everything, and a backup plan that has never been tested
  • Remote and hybrid staff fighting a slow VPN to reach files and applications
  • IT costs that arrive as large, unpredictable capital purchases
  • A reporting or AI project that stalls because the data sits on a server in a closet

What is included in an Azure migration?

Every engagement is scoped to your environment, but the building blocks are consistent: assessment, a business case, a secure Azure foundation, the server, database and file moves, and a cost and operations handover. You get a working Azure environment and the documentation to run it, not a slide deck.

  • Discovery and assessment. An inventory of your servers, databases and web apps using Azure Migrate, Microsoft's free migration service, which maps the dependencies between servers, checks Azure readiness and right-sizes each workload from its measured performance. We add interviews with the people who use each system, because the inventory never tells you which application the accounts team cannot live without.
  • Business case and cost estimate. A comparison of what you spend today with what the same workloads should cost in Azure, including licensing. Azure Hybrid Benefit lets you apply eligible Windows Server and SQL Server licenses with active Software Assurance or qualifying subscriptions, and reservations or savings plans lower the price of workloads that run all the time.
  • Landing zone. The Azure foundation, built before the first workload moves: subscriptions, networking, Microsoft Entra ID identity, role-based access, Azure Policy guardrails and Azure Backup. In Microsoft's Cloud Adoption Framework this is the Ready phase, and skipping it is how environments become unmanageable a year later.
  • Server migration. VMware, Hyper-V and physical servers replicated to Azure virtual machines with Azure Migrate, test-migrated, then cut over in a planned window.
  • Database migration. SQL Server moved to Azure SQL Managed Instance, Azure SQL Database or SQL Server on an Azure virtual machine, chosen by the features your applications actually use.
  • Files and web apps. File servers moved to Azure Files, or to SharePoint and OneDrive where that suits how people work, and in-house web applications moved to Azure App Service where they are a good fit.
  • Cost and operations handover. Budgets and alerts in Microsoft Cost Management, backup and monitoring in place, a written runbook, and training for whoever runs Azure day to day.

How does an Azure migration engagement work?

An Azure migration runs in four stages: assess, plan and build the foundation, migrate in waves, then optimize and hand over. You approve the output of each stage before the next begins, and the original servers stay running until you sign off, so a rollback path exists throughout.

  • 1. Assess. Discovery with Azure Migrate, user interviews, a dependency map and a first cost estimate. You get a list of every workload with a recommended treatment and the reasons for it.
  • 2. Plan and build the foundation. Migration waves grouped by dependency and risk, a cutover and rollback plan for each, and the landing zone built and tested.
  • 3. Migrate in waves. A low-risk pilot workload moves first so the process is proven on your own systems. Each wave is replicated, test-migrated, checked with the people who use it, then cut over. The original server stays in place until you sign off.
  • 4. Optimize and hand over. Resizing based on real usage in Azure, budgets and alerts, backup checks, documentation and training for your team or your IT provider.

Which migration strategy fits each workload?

Microsoft's Cloud Adoption Framework names the options: retire, retain, rehost, replatform, refactor, rearchitect, rebuild and replace. Rehosting is a quick, low-risk like-for-like move that also carries existing problems into Azure. Replatforming moves a workload to a managed service with minimal code changes. Replacing swaps a custom system for a software-as-a-service product.

Replatforming has a side benefit: you stop patching operating systems for that workload. For most small and mid-sized businesses the work is mainly rehost, replatform, replace and retire. Refactoring or rebuilding code is the exception, and we recommend it only when the business case is clear. The table below shows how common workloads usually land.

When is an Azure migration not the right move?

Sometimes the honest answer is that you do not need Azure at all. If your servers mainly hold files and email and you already pay for Microsoft 365, SharePoint and OneDrive may cover it; start with our Microsoft 365 consulting. If your key application has a vendor cloud edition, replacing it is often simpler.

Some workloads should stay where they are: machine controllers, badge systems and anything tied to local hardware or very low latency. Azure Arc can bring those under the same management as your Azure resources without moving them.

We are also not a 24/7 managed service provider. If you need someone to answer helpdesk tickets and patch laptops, keep or hire an IT provider; we work alongside them and hand the environment over to them. And if your estate runs to thousands of servers across several datacenters, you need a larger migration team than one senior consultant can lead.

Why work with Lightray Solutions on an Azure migration?

You work directly with Edward Pinela, MBA, the principal consultant who makes the technical calls from assessment through handover. No one junior takes over once the work is signed. His work has earned Lightray a 4.9★ Google rating, backed by 20+ years of experience and 200+ projects delivered.

Our other work shapes how we migrate. Lightray also builds data platforms and reporting, so we plan with the next step in mind: once your SQL Server data is in Azure, it can feed Microsoft Fabric and Power BI without another project to dig it out. For wider Azure architecture beyond migration, see our Azure consulting services.

  • Direct communication. A reply within 4 business hours, from the person doing the work
  • Remote delivery. The work happens in your own Azure tenant, over video and screen share, so it runs the same wherever your servers are
  • Your team trained. Documentation and hands-on training so your staff or IT provider can run the environment after handover

Frequently asked questions

How much downtime will an Azure migration cause?

Less than most people expect, but not zero. Azure Migrate replicates a server to Azure while it keeps running, and you can run a test migration without touching production. The final cutover is a short, scheduled window, usually outside business hours. Planned downtime is agreed per workload in the migration plan, and the original server stays in place until you sign off, so there is always a way back.

What do Azure cloud migration services cost?

It depends on scope rather than a fixed package. The main cost drivers are the number of servers and databases, how many need to change rather than move as they are, how many applications need vendor involvement, and how much testing and training you want. Azure Migrate's discovery and assessment tools are free, and your Azure consumption is billed separately by Microsoft. You receive a written, itemized scope after the free strategy call and assessment.

Will Azure cost more than running our own servers?

It can if a migration simply copies oversized servers and leaves them running around the clock. We size each workload from its measured performance, apply Azure Hybrid Benefit where your licenses qualify, use reservations or savings plans for steady workloads, shut down test machines outside working hours, and set budgets with alerts. The assessment gives you a cost estimate before you commit to moving anything.

How long does a migration take?

It depends on how many workloads you have and how they depend on each other. A small environment can often move within weeks once the landing zone is ready, while a larger one runs over several waves. The biggest variables are application vendors, testing windows and how quickly the people who use each system can confirm it works. The assessment produces a wave plan with dates.

Is the work remote, and what do you need from us?

Yes. The work happens remotely in your own Azure tenant; anything that has to be done at the server itself, such as installing a migration appliance, your IT staff or provider does with us on a video call. We need an Azure subscription your business owns, administrator access that you can remove at any time, time with the people who use each system, and your IT staff or provider ready to take over. Before handover we document the environment, set up budgets, backup and monitoring, and train whoever will run it.
