Microsoft Azure Consulting Services for Growing Businesses
Azure is running, the bill keeps creeping up, and nobody is quite sure who can change what. We review what you have, fix the foundation, and leave you with an environment that is secure, documented and priced on purpose.
Our Microsoft Azure consulting services help small and mid-sized businesses decide what belongs in Azure, build it on a secure foundation, and keep the monthly bill predictable. Edward Pinela, MBA, does the work himself: reviewing your current environment, designing the landing zone, moving workloads, tightening security and cost, and handing over documentation your team can run with.
Work starts with a free 30-minute strategy call. Azure consulting has no published package price: after a short review of your environment you receive a written, itemized quote. Microsoft bills your Azure usage directly, so what the platform costs always stays separate from what the consulting costs.
What does an Azure consultant do for a small business?
An Azure consultant makes the decisions a small IT team rarely has time to research: which services to use, how to secure them, how to organize subscriptions and access, and how to stop paying for capacity nobody uses. For most of our clients that means one of five pieces of work, often in this order:
- Environment review. A written assessment of an Azure tenant that grew without a plan: who has access to what, what is exposed to the internet, what is backed up, and where the money goes.
- Landing zone. The foundation built before anything important moves in: subscriptions, networking, Microsoft Entra ID identity and role-based access, Azure Policy guardrails, backup and monitoring.
- Migration. Servers, SQL Server databases and file shares moved from an office server room or an aging host. See Azure cloud migration services for how that runs.
- Infrastructure and operations. Virtual machines, networking, backup and disaster recovery designed and documented; see Azure infrastructure as a service.
- Data and reporting. Your Azure data feeding Microsoft Fabric and Power BI, so the platform pays for itself in decisions, not just uptime.
| Business need | Azure services involved | What you receive |
|---|---|---|
| Nobody is sure what is in the tenant or who can change it | Microsoft Entra ID, role-based access control, Azure Policy | A written review, an access clean-up and guardrails that stop new sprawl |
| The monthly bill keeps rising | Microsoft Cost Management, Azure Advisor, reservations and savings plans | A cost baseline, right-sized resources, budgets and alerts |
| Servers or SQL Server need to leave the office | Azure Migrate, Azure virtual machines, Azure SQL | A wave plan, a tested migration and a rollback path |
| Backups and recovery have never been tested | Azure Backup, Azure Site Recovery | Backup policies, a restore test and a written recovery runbook |
| Security gaps and the new MFA rule | Conditional Access, managed identities, Microsoft Defender for Cloud | Least-privilege access, automation that signs in safely and a security baseline |
| Data is stuck where reporting cannot reach it | Azure SQL, Microsoft Fabric, Power BI | A data path from source systems to dashboards |
How does an Azure consulting engagement work?
We follow the structure of Microsoft's Cloud Adoption Framework, which breaks Azure adoption into seven phases: Strategy, Plan, Ready, Adopt, Govern, Secure and Manage. For a small or mid-sized business those collapse into four stages, and you approve the output of each one before the next begins.
- 1. Review and plan. A free strategy call, then a review of your tenant or your on-premises servers, interviews with the people who rely on each system, and a written plan with an itemized quote.
- 2. Build the foundation. The landing zone: identity, access, networking, policy, backup and cost budgets, built and tested before any workload depends on it.
- 3. Move or build the workloads. Migrations run in planned waves with a rollback path; new builds are deployed into the governed foundation instead of beside it.
- 4. Secure, hand over and review. Security checks, monitoring and alerts, a written runbook, training for whoever runs Azure day to day, and a cost review once real usage data exists.
How do you keep Azure costs under control?
Azure bills by the minute, by the gigabyte and by the transaction, so cost is a design decision rather than an invoice surprise. Microsoft's Well-Architected Framework treats Cost Optimization as one of its five pillars alongside Reliability, Security, Operational Excellence and Performance Efficiency, and we review every environment against all five.
In practice the savings come from a short list of habits that most unmanaged tenants skip:
- Right-sizing virtual machines and databases from their measured use, not the size someone guessed on day one
- Shutting down test and development machines outside working hours
- Reservations or savings plans for workloads that run around the clock
- Azure Hybrid Benefit where your existing Windows Server and SQL Server licenses qualify
- Budgets and alerts in Microsoft Cost Management, and a monthly look at Azure Advisor's recommendations
- Deleting orphaned disks, public IP addresses and snapshots left behind by old projects
Is your Azure environment secure enough?
Most small-business Azure tenants we review share the same gaps: too many people with Owner rights, administrator accounts shared between staff, storage or remote desktop ports reachable from the internet, and backups that have never been restored as a test.
Microsoft has also tightened the rules. Since October 2025 it has been enforcing multifactor authentication for anyone who creates, changes or deletes Azure resources through the Azure CLI, PowerShell, infrastructure-as-code tools or the API, and the last postponements ran out on July 1, 2026. Scripts that sign in as an ordinary user account fail under that rule. We move them to managed identities or service principals, set up Conditional Access or security defaults, trim access to least privilege, and turn on Microsoft Defender for Cloud's recommendations so the gaps stay visible after we leave.
When is an Azure consultant not the right hire?
If your servers mainly hold files and email and you already pay for Microsoft 365, you may not need Azure at all, because SharePoint and OneDrive often cover file sharing and remote access without any servers to run or patch. Start with Microsoft 365 consulting instead.
We are also not a 24/7 managed service provider. If you need someone to answer helpdesk tickets and patch laptops, keep or hire an IT provider; we work alongside them and hand the environment over to them. And if your estate runs to thousands of servers across several datacenters, you need a larger team than one senior consultant can lead.
Why work with Lightray Solutions on Azure?
You work directly with Edward Pinela, MBA, the principal consultant who makes the technical calls from the first review to handover. Nobody junior takes over once the work is signed. Lightray holds a 4.9★ Google rating, backed by 20+ years of experience and 200+ projects delivered.
Because Lightray also builds reporting and data platforms, we design Azure with the next step in mind: the data you move or create can feed Fabric and Power BI without another project to dig it out. The work is remote and happens in your own Azure tenant, so it runs the same for a firm in Los Angeles, Orange County or anywhere else in the United States.
- No resale margin. Your Azure subscription is in your company's name and billed by Microsoft, so our advice on cost has no conflict.
- Documented, not dependent. Every engagement ends with a runbook, diagrams and training, so your staff or IT provider can run the environment without us.
- Plain-language decisions. Each recommendation comes with what it costs, what it protects against and what happens if you skip it.

Frequently asked questions
What do Microsoft Azure consulting services cost?
It depends on scope rather than a fixed package. The main cost drivers are how many subscriptions and workloads are involved, whether anything has to move, how much security and access work is needed, and how much documentation and training you want. You receive a written, itemized quote after the free strategy call and a short review. Your Azure usage is billed separately by Microsoft.
Do we have to buy Azure through you?
No. Your Azure subscription stays in your company's name and is billed by Microsoft, or by the provider you already use. We do not resell Azure or take a margin on usage, so cost recommendations are made purely on what saves you money.
Can you work alongside our current IT provider?
Yes, and that is the most common arrangement. Your IT provider keeps the day-to-day support, helpdesk and devices; we handle the Azure design, migration, security and cost work, then hand the environment over to them with documentation and a walkthrough so nothing depends on us afterwards.
Is the work remote, and what access do you need?
All of the work is remote, done in your own Azure tenant over video calls and screen share. We need an administrator account you create for us and can remove at any time, time with the people who rely on each system, and someone from your side or your IT provider to take over at handover.
We already use Azure. Is a review still worth it?
Usually yes. Environments that grew one project at a time tend to carry unused resources, broad access rights and untested backups. A review gives you a prioritized list of fixes with the cost and risk of each, and you decide which ones to act on, with us or on your own.
You Won’t Get Handed Off to Junior Staff.
At most consulting firms, the senior person who sold you shows up for the kickoff — then you get handed to a team of juniors learning on your dime. That’s not how we work.
When you hire Lightray Solutions, you work directly with Edward Pinela, MBA — a principal consultant with 20+ years of experience across Power BI, web development, SEO, and CRM systems. Edward architects every engagement personally, stays involved through delivery, and answers his own phone.
